One of the many lessons the pandemic has taught us is that mayors matter. They make on-the-ground public health decisions. They control information and data. They oversee police, fire and schools.

We've talked a lot about the Boston mayoral race, but there were some other fascinating preliminaries Tuesday in communities from Lynn to Newton, Gloucester and Framingham, where incumbents defended, open seats were contested, and everything from race, gender, to COVID, was at play.

We break it all down with Lisa Kashinsky, reporter for Politico and the author of the Massachusetts Playbook.

This segment aired on September 15, 2021.
