In Boston, liquor licenses can sell for as much as $500,000 between private sellers. Critics say those sales happen within an arcane system that often can shut out new businesses and restaurant owners of color.

Now, several Boston city councilors are pushing to add 200 new liquor licenses with the hope most will go to underserved neighborhoods like Mattapan, Hyde Park and Roxbury.

This segment aired on April 11, 2022.
