A military jury has handed down a verdict in the first war crimes trial at Guantanamo Bay.

Salim Hamdan — a former driver for Osama bin Laden — was convicted Wednesday of supporting terrorism, but he was cleared on conspiracy charges.

Brian Glynn Williams was a defense witness in the trial. He teaches Islamic history at UMass Dartmouth, and is an expert on terrorism in the Middle East and the nomadic tribes of Central Asia.

Professor Williams joins WBUR's Bob Oakes to talk about the Hamdan verdict.

This program aired on August 7, 2008.
