Colleges Wait To Confirm Fall Class Sizes

BOSTON — Friday is a deadline for students to confirm their intentions to attend college.

With the economy throwing many families’ ability to pay for college into jeopardy, many area schools increased the number of students admitted this year. Friday they find out how many students have accepted.

“I feel like students are holding off to the very last minute to make their decisions,” said Ann McDermott, admissions director for the College of the Holy Cross. “I think people certainly are nervous and want to make sure they are choosing wisely.”

Tufts University is seeing the same number of commitments at this time as it did last year. But Newbury College in Brookline says deposits are up 35 percent. Schools will not have final counts of whether they are under-enrolled or over-committed until the end of next week.
