Rare Stradivarius Violin Sold For $1 Million

BOSTON — A Boston violin-maker brokered the sale of a rare Stradivarius violin.

The violin was crafted by Antonio Stradivari in 1671, and sold for $1 million.

An estimated 600 Stradivarius violins survive world-wide. They rarely change hands and have fetched up to $3.5 million at auction houses.

This sale was arranged by Boston violin-maker Marco Coppiardi. He said the instrument is a stellar example of Stradivarius’s early period.

Since 1851 it has been played in Austria, Germany and France.

It is a violin that will stay in Boston for the next few years and it is likely to be played on one of the city’s stages.

For now, though, both the seller and new owner of the Stradivarius wish to remain anonymous.
