'T' Chief Plans Total Cell Ban After Trolley Crash

It's not yet clear when the Government Center 'T' station will reopen, as officials follow up on a trolley collision that injured about 50 people on Friday night.

Meanwhile, the MBTA's general manager, Dan Grabauskas, says he plans to toughen the agency's cellphone ban after 'T' officials say a trolley operator told them he was texting at the time of the crash.

Grabauskas says trolley, train and bus drivers may soon be banned from having a cellphone in their possession while on the job.

He says a total ban is necessary because the operator involved in Friday's crash was not obeying the agency's existing prohibition on cellphone use.

The president of the Boston Carmen's Union, Steven MacDougall, supports the new move but says the driver in question is not typical of his approximately 6,000 members.

"This was an individual act by an individual who does not represent the attitude or the professional conduct of all or most MBTA workers," MacDougall said.

The driver faces likely dismissal and possible criminal charges.
