Gun Sales Up For Smith & Wesson
BOSTON — Springfield-based firearms-maker Smith & Wesson reports that its profit doubled last quarter.
Gunmakers generally have seen a boost in sales recently amid fears that the Obama Administration would restrict some weapons. But just as that business was beginning to slow, Smith & Wesson CEO Mike Golden reported that strong sales to police and the military have helped the company reach record earnings.
“Smith & Wesson branded pistols were up 33 percent for the quarter. Our tactical rifles grew over 195 percent,” said Golden. He said that is thanks in part to a big order from police in India after the terrorist attacks in Mumbai.
Smith & Wesson manufactures its firearms in Springfield and has plants in Maine and New Hampshire.
