Report: Poor Communication Led To Near Collision At Logan

Investigators are blaming a breakdown in communication for a near disaster last week at Logan Airport, when a construction worker drove his truck into the path of a departing plane.

According to a preliminary National Transportation Safety Board report, the truck driver was not in radio communication with the control tower and runway closure signs were not in place before the incident.

The runway where the incident occured was occassionally closed due to construction on a nearby taxiway.

The report adds: “The Airport Authority … indicated that all personnel were briefed that the runway was active. The driver of the vehicle indicated that he had not been briefed to that fact.”

The driver was suspended pending an investigation by Massport, the state authority that runs the airport.

A Massport spokesman said the agency expects to complete the investigation next week, and to restart construction work, which was halted after the incident.
