Gambling Debate Kicks Off At State House

BOSTON — A new round of public debate about allowing casinos in Massachusetts kicks off at the State House on Monday.

Debate about specific bills that would allow slot machines at race tracks and or destination casinos is not expected until the fall. But the Senate is getting ready with an informational hearing Monday on how the economy is affecting gambling revenues and rates of problem gamblers. Sen. Karen Spilka, who will chair the hearing, said she is keeping an open mind on how the state should proceed.

“I’m interested in anything that has a lot of job creation, a lot of economic benefits. But I am also aware of addiction and the economic and social impacts on municipalities,” said Spilka.

Senators will also hear from experts on gambling regulation and tax rates. Casino developers were not invited to testify.
