WBURBoston Police Punished In Steroid Probe

Published July 3, 2009  Updated November 11

BOSTON — Eleven Boston police officers were punished as the result of an internal investigation on steroid use inside the department.

According to Police Commissioner Ed Davis, seven police officers admitted to using steroids but an internal investigation found no wide spread use of the drug on the force.

“It is something that is detrimental to their well-being and it is also something that increases the potential for violence,” Davis said.

The penalties ranged from written reprimands to a month and a half of unpaid leave. None of the officers will be fired or face criminal charges.

The three-year-long internal investigation began after a federal grand jury looked into steroid use and after-hours parties attended by Boston police. Four officers were indicted in that investigation.
