Charlie Baker Promises No New Taxes In Campaign Kickoff

Republican gubernatorial candidate Charlie Baker officially kicked off his campaign Wednesday promising no new taxes and facing strong attacks from opponents.

Baker said he wouldn't raise taxes as governor and he'd work to roll back a 25 percent sales tax increase going into effect this weekend.

He also criticized lawmakers and the Patrick administration for not heading off financial problems earlier.

"One of the ways you manage through a difficult environment is to make sure you haven't done things to put yourself in a position where a big problem becomes a catastrophe," Baker said. "And I feel like that's what we did."

An e-mail from Democratic Lieutenant Gov. Tim Murray to supporters said Baker put profits over people in his job as the head of Harvard Pilgrim HealthCare.
