WBURLate Labor Day Pushes Back School For Some

The day after Labor Day is when most schools throw open their doors and welcome students back after summer vacation. This year, however, Labor Day is Sept. 7 — later than most years.

Those schools that stick to the traditional academic calendar will get a late start — which could mean a later-than-usual end to the school year next summer.

To find out more, we spoke with Paul Andrews, the director of Professional Development and Government Services at the Massachusetts Association of School Superintendents.

I think this 180 day rule is ridiculous. I work as a teaching assistant at an elementary school where we only have a six hour school day. Come on… with lunch, recess and special we are only able keep the kids attention on school work for 4 hours? Why not extend the school day by an hour or hour and a half instead of having the school year go until July!
