Small Fire Closes Downtown Boston Subway Stations

BOSTON — An electrical fire at the South Station train stop has forced the MBTA to suspend downtown service on two subway lines.

MBTA spokesman Joe Pesaturo said the fire Wednesday evening started in wiring that feeds the electrified third rail at South Station.

He said the fire department asked the MBTA to shut off the power downtown, making it impossible for subway trains on the Red Line and Orange Line to run. No one was hurt.

Pesaturo said the small fire was still smouldering. The MBTA was running buses between the JFK-UMass and Cambridge stops on the Red Line and Back Bay to North Station or Haymarket on the Orange Line.Small fire closes downtown Boston subway stations

The fire comes a day after an MBTA commuter train hit a bumper at the end of a track, causing several minor injuries.
