BOSTON — Maestro James Levine will not return to the podium at Symphony Hall this month as planned.
The conductor was hoping to make his return this coming Friday, but on Monday the Boston Symphony Orchestra announced the conductor needs more time to recover from his recent back surgery.
This means Levine will miss every concert in the BSO’s long-planned presentation of Beethoven’s entire symphony cycle.
Conductor Lorin Maazel, who most recently directed the New York Philharmonic, will lead the BSO in the two final programs, including Beethoven’s Symphony No. 6, No. 7, No.8 and No.9.
BSO Assistant Conductor Julian Kuerti takes on Symphony No. 3 and No. 4 on Tuesday and Wednesday night.
All of the concerts in the current series at Symphony Hall are sold out.
