BROCKTON, Mass. — A 17-year-old boy was been shot and wounded near the Brockton High School gym, where winter sports tryouts were being held, and police are looking for a suspect.

School Superintendent Matthew Malone told reporters outside the high school Wednesday evening that the victim dropped out of the school a year ago.

The Brockton Enterprise reports that witnesses said they heard five or six shots about 5 p.m. No one else was injured.

The newspaper reports that the victim was carried down the stairs of the school on a stretcher and taken to a hospital.

The police department did not immediately release details.
