WBURCrowd Lines Northeastern As Obama Stumps For Coakley

BOSTON — Thousands of people lined up along Huntington Avenue on Sunday afternoon, trying to get inside Northeastern University’s Cabot Center as they awaited President Obama’s appearance. Mr. Obama was scheduled to speak at 3 p.m. to campaign for Democratic Attorney General Martha Coakley, ahead of the Jan. 19 special general election for the U.S. Senate.

At about 2:30 p.m., the gymnasium was nearly full and the doors just closed, so the crowd outside could only expect to see the presidential motorcade. Inside, Gov. Deval Patrick and the congressional delegation waited for Mr. Obama’s arrival.

Democratic Rep. Jim McGovern said he is calling all of his relatives to make sure they vote in the election on Tuesday. McGovern said he is frustrated that Republican state Sen. Scott Brown is masquerading as a moderate or progressive Republican, as McGovern says Brown’s voting record is that of a right-wing conservative.

NJ, VA, Copenhagen…….a waste of my tax dollars on fuel spent to get here.

  • Larry

Hey kids, don’t be fooled by the left’s rhetoric…….you’ll still be paying for their mistakes when I’m gone.

  • Crystal

Obama you just made Brown that much closer to victory. You are a fool and are very pompous to think that you could actually help a campaign.

Wish I were there to share a piece of history…’bout time MA brought a woman to DC.

I was saddened by the strange Brown Supporters holding up posters of Obama and Reed with Hitler Mustaches and hateful slogans. Crystal and Larry seem to be of that group of people who are ruled by these fearful emotions and do not follow the studies that show the U.S. wasting the most money on Healthcare and yet we are not even in the top 5 for life expectancy. Ted Kennedy worked his career for healthcare and I hope voters will remember his legacy and flock to elect Martha Coakley.

  • Joan

Obama’s speech was very motivating. I think he was very helpful to Coakley making sure people understood the difference between a vote for Coakley and a vote for Brown.

I’m pulling for Massachusetts voters to send Martha to the Senate to pass a Healthcare Law. We and our economy will be stronger by helping the millions now outside our system………..and yes, the Bill isn’t everything we all want, but we may not have a second chance like this one.

Nice of him to use our money to fly around the country just to support a candidate who is obviously going to lose. His prior endorsements have proven futile. Every few years the citizens of MA have to be shaken to get out and do the right thing. Keep the US map RED in 2010. Thank you MA for waking up just in time. Now let’s see what criminal activity they pull off to either delay his seating or cram this bill down our throats before the man can even vote. How can anyone support this type of government? Remember – they work for us.

Crystal: It is common for presidents to help stump for their party’s candidate in an election. Albeit generally when a candidate is seen to be on shaky ground, but it is common nonetheless. George Bush the junior did so, Bill Clinton did so, George Bush the senior did so, etc. etc. Future presidents will also do the same thing.

Larry: Former presidents have spent plenty of taxpayers dollars on purposeful trips to use their image, power, and influence to help further a position. Left or right, rhetoric or no, we will all be paying for their mistakes.

  • Debbie

There is no way Brown can be a moderate! Either follow his past or look at what the GOP is saying his purpose will be. Brown will hold zero power in the Senate. He will vote as he is told to. Like Brown or not he cannot say he is a moderate, the facts do not lie.

  • Sarah

Stop making things up, Coakley supporters. The Brown supporters have been enthusiastic, but peaceful. The message of hate has been from Martha alone, who seems more obsessed with a former president than the issues at hand.

  • Betty

I really believe that this year Pres. Obama will take a more populist turn but if the dems lose that sixtieth seat, then those opportunities for real change will be lost.

  • Brian

@ Larry-How about all that fuel and those lives wasted in the unlawful war in Iraq?

  • BillN

Is that the same empty suit McGovern that was proud that he did not read the Cap and Trade bill? He is also the one who said he did not read the bills because they had too much legalese. Hopefully, he will be the next one to face a challenger.

  • Christos

    @John Carrera:

Those were not Brown supporters. They were Lyndon LaRouche supporters. If you were within 10 feet of them and looked at their sign closely, you would have seen that.
