Five Killed In Warwick RI Fire

Five people, including an infant, were killed Saturday in a house fire in Warwick, Rhode Island.

Authorities said the victims, including a seven-month old baby, were found just after noon unconscious and severely burned on the second floor of a house at 343 Buttonwoods Ave.

Warwick Fire Chief Kevin Sullivan called it a "gruesome" scene and said firefighters "just kept pulling people out one after the other."

The victims included 21-year-old Amanda Villeneuve and her daughter, Annabelle, who both lived at the house, which was owned by her father, James Weeden.

Two other victims were identified as 20-year-old Dan Janik of Woonsocket and 24-year-old Nicholas Jillson of North Smithfield. The name of 20-year-woman who was killed hasn't been released.

Authorities said the fire was not suspicious, but declined to release its cause.

Fire officials said no working smoke detectors have been found in the home.

Warwick Mayor Scott Avidesian said the magnitude of the tragedy has stunned the community.

"The repercussions are felt throughout the whole city." said Avidesian. "This is an unusual type of fire..we usually don't have any fatalities in fires."

This was one of the deadliest fires in Rhode Island history after the 2003 Station nightclub fire that killed 100 people.
