Sen. Brown Receives Military-Related Committee Assignments

New Massachusetts Sen. — and National Guardsman — Scott Brown has received his committee assignments.

The Republican, who holds the rank of lieutenant colonel, will serve on the Senate's Armed Services, Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs and Veterans Affairs Committees.

The Republican says he expect to play a role in protecting the shores and ports of Massachusetts as a member of the Senate Homeland Security Committee, which has oversight of the U.S. Coast Guard.

"We are currently involved in two wars, and these committees are critical in keeping our country safe, as well as protecting the men and women who defend us," Brown said in a statement.

Republican Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky named Brown to the committees. The appointments must be ratified through a Senate resolution.

Brown emphasized his military background during the campaign leading up to his stunning victory in the special election to fill the seat of the late Sen. Edward M. Kennedy.
