WBURSen. Brown Receives Military-Related Committee Assignments

BOSTON — New Massachusetts Sen. — and National Guardsman — Scott Brown has received his committee assignments.

The Republican, who holds the rank of lieutenant colonel, will serve on the Senate’s Armed Services, Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs and Veterans Affairs Committees.

The Republican says he expect to play a role in protecting the shores and ports of Massachusetts as a member of the Senate Homeland Security Committee, which has oversight of the U.S. Coast Guard.

“We are currently involved in two wars, and these committees are critical in keeping our country safe, as well as protecting the men and women who defend us,” Brown said in a statement.

Republican Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky named Brown to the committees. The appointments must be ratified through a Senate resolution.

Brown emphasized his military background during the campaign leading up to his stunning victory in the special election to fill the seat of the late Sen. Edward M. Kennedy.

During this morning’s interview I was disappointed that you did not even attempt to challenge the misleading statements made by Scott Brown. First, he called reconciliation the nuclear option (the nuclear option was the Republican threat to eliminate the filibuster NOT reconciliation). Second, he suggested that using reconciliation is a parliamentary trick. You never challenged him by suggesting that the filibuster is the real parliamentary trick and reconciliation is just a majority rules vote. NPR, you can do better than to let this propaganda go unchallenged.
