WBURListen: Mass. Women Uniquely Affected By Recession, Study Says

A study (PDF) out Wednesday says there are important differences between how women and men in Massachusetts experience the recession.

While unemployment is a bigger problem for men, women appear to be having an even more difficult time overall.

Professor Randy Albelda, a research associate at the University of Massachusetts Boston Center for Social Policy and the study’s co-author, joined WBUR Wednesday to discuss the findings and what they mean for Massachusetts.

My issue is with the word UNIQUE in the title of the article – if women now make up more than half the work force how can what happens to them be unique (as opposed to men?)? You make it sound as if women are a rare entity. The word “differences” in the opening line of the article is absolutely the correct way to define the situation. Language is very important and if women are to ever be considered equal, journalists must describe situations in ways that relect that equality.

    Keep up the great work.
