Report: Mass. Hospitals Had $17B In Assets In 2008

A new report finds most Massachusetts hospitals have added to their financial assets during the past five years.

The report by the state Executive Office of Health and Human Services says the total net assets of Massachusetts hospitals exceeded $17 billion dollars in 2008.

The hospitals with the greatest amount of unrestricted assets in 2008 were Children's Hospital with $951 million and Massachusetts General Hospital with $710 million.

The hospitals with the least were Caritas Carney Hospital with a deficit of $20 million and Merrimack Valley Hospital with a deficit of $8 million.

The release of the report comes just ahead of a planned debate in the Massachusetts Senate on a bill that would require hospitals in better financial shape put money back into the health care system to lower premium costs.
