Listen: Pastor Calls For Outside Help To Deal With Urban Violence

Two suspects face arraignment Tuesday in relation to the shooting death of a 14-year-old in Dorchester over the weekend. Police say the victim, Nicholas Fomby-Davis, was not in a gang, but the suspects are known members.

It's the second time this month that a Boston teenager has been shot and killed on a city street. Fourteen-year-old Jaewon Martin was killed in Roxbury — and, like Fomby-Davis, was believed to be uninvolved in gang violence.

Boston Police Commissioner Ed Davis is mounting a "coordinated response" against the gangs allegedly involved in Fomby-Davis' death. But Rev. Bruce Wall, pastor of Global Ministries Christian Church in Codman Square, is calling for a more comprehensive plan to take on the city's violence.

"The city is reacting to every shooting," Wall said in an interview with WBUR's Bob Oakes. "We should have anticipated that this happens during this time of year."

Wall called on the city to bring in outside help to create a long-term strategy for mitigating urban violence.

"We bring in an outsider who doesn't have any ties to our city," Wall said, "somebody who would come in and study what's happening to our city."

Wall thinks only an impartial observer can help the city take a long look at itself and "look at the root causes, the systemic issues and then help us to chart a new course for Boston."
