After Shark Sighting, Chatham Beaches Open

Closed earlier on Friday, most beaches in Chatham opened at 3 p.m. after the latest report of a great white shark sighting on Thursday.

Chatham's South Beach remained closed.

The Chatham harbormaster, Stuart Smith, had said a credible shark sighting Friday would have kept all the town's beaches closed for the weekend.

Smith also says the shark sightings don't seem to be hurting tourism in the seaside community. In fact, they may even be helping.

"It's the height of the season so Chatham is pretty busy to begin with," he said, "but they're certainly garnering a lot of interest in the sharks."

Elsewhere in Massachusetts, a number of beaches were closed Friday due to high levels of bacteria.

Carson Beach in South Boston, Tenean Beach in Dorchester and Wollaston Beach in Quincy were closed to swimmers Friday. Additional beaches in Quincy were also closed.
