The Associated PressFour Mass. Gubernatorial Candidates Set For Debate

BOSTON — The four gubernatorial candidates in Massachusetts are set to face off in the first of several TV debates before the general election in November.

The candidates, none of whom have a Sept. 14 primary opponent, will square off Tuesday at 7 p.m. on WBZ-TV.

Gov. Deval Patrick has been leading in the polls with Republican Charles Baker not far behind.

Independent candidate Timothy Cahill, the state’s treasurer, has been a distant third in recent polls.

Baker has consistently portrayed himself as a pro-business conservative who will reduce taxes and government spending, but Patrick and Cahill have both criticized him for contributing to Big Dig cost overruns while the state’s budget chief in the 1990s.

Green-Rainbow candidate Jill Stein will also participate in the debate.

Four years ago, our Governor came to office with promises of “change”, collaboration in government, and support for his grassroots movement followers. What we’ve seen since his coming to office is quite the contrary– he was at odds with the Mass. legislators even before entering office.

His ideas are generally remakes of ideas being touted in other states, like gambling, and other things that sound good but don’t bear close scrutiny. His proposal for the state to foot costs to vaccinate all middle school girls against cervix cancer comes to mind. That series of three shots is incredibly expensive, was not supported by the girls’ parents, and most ironically, was already covered by most health insurance plans.

And, with all the budget cutting going on, should I remind Massachusetts of the monies he was spending to refurbish his office. Some $30,000 alone for new drapes. And then there was the car lease he expected the state to foot, way higher than Governor Romney’s expenses. Having worked recently in a state office, I might also point to some of the inefficient ways those Stimulus funds got spent, or even the way one state park was letting hundreds of park goers in every day due to a broken money machine, rather than have someone sit outside collection money, for a potential loss of many thousands of dollars during high use summer months…. Or the closing of municipal pools in summers, but then paying for “cooling centers” for people to go to when the heat got intense this summer. Penny-wise and pound foolish describes this administration to a “T”.

So, might we vote once more for “change”– this time change for the better?!

God Bless us all. We need it.
