Cahill Votes Democratic After Avoiding Primary

Gubernatorial candidate Timothy Cahill has decided to cast a Democratic ballot after all.

The Massachusetts state treasurer changed course Tuesday after initially saying he would not vote because he was concerned it would compromise his ability to run as an independent in November's general election.

Secretary of State William Galvin says he repeatedly told Cahill's campaign that casting a primary vote would not affect Cahill's independent status. Galvin then put his position in writing.

Cahill is a former Democrat running against the Democratic incumbent, Gov. Deval Patrick, as well as Republican Charles Baker and Green-Rainbow candidate Jill Stein.

The Quincy resident says he wanted to vote in the Democratic primary because friends were in local races.
