Mass. Candidates For Gov. Face Off In Final Debate

All four candidates for governor get one final chance to make their case to voters as they take part in their last broadcast debate Monday night.

In recent polling, Democratic incumbent Gov. Deval Patrick has a small lead over his Republican challenger, Charles Baker.

Tufts University political science Prof. Jeff Berry says Monday is Baker's last chance.

"He needs a breakthrough tonight, and it's not clear how you do it in a debate, because saying something out of the ordinary is very risky," Berry said.

Berry says Baker needs to call into question whether Patrick is fit for office, while Patrick must drive home that he's both fiscally competent and cares about social matters.

The hourlong debate — the candidates' 16th this election season — will be moderated by former ABC News anchor Charles Gibson.

The debate will be broadcast on 90.9 WBUR-FM Monday at 7 p.m. and will be followed by live on-air analysis. The debate will also be streamed on wbur.org, with an accompanying live-blog.

This program aired on October 25, 2010. The audio for this program is not available.
