"I'm going to be 68 next month and I think that's an appropriate expiration date for someone to be running a dynamic contemporary media entity that increasingly has to surge into the digital world," La Camera said after making the announcement at a station-wide meeting Friday afternoon.

"To be frank, I'm more of a traditionalist and that's not necessarily my strength," he added.

La Camera will stay on with WBUR and Boston University as university administrator for public radio, but will give up his day-to-day management duties.

"It's going to be a largely ambassadorial role, and I hope to help my successor through her or his transition as best I can," La Camera said. "I'll remain very involved in a variety of civic affairs across the city, including a trustee of the Boston Public Library and continue to represent the university in those types of endeavors."

La Camera was appointed general manager in October 2005. Previously, La Camera served for more than 33 years at WCVB-TV, including 12 years as president and general manager.

Boston University, which holds WBUR-FM’s broadcasting license, is expected to name a new general manager in the next few weeks.

This program aired on November 19, 2010. The audio for this program is not available.
