Schools Look To Saturdays To Make Up For Snow Days

The high number of snow days in almost all school districts — some have had seven or eight snow days already — has education leaders talking about how to make up for lost time.

State Education Commissioner Mitchell Chester has suggested using Saturdays or part of April vacation to make up snow days. Most districts have built in five extra days for make-up days, but with the recent school closures, some have already used them up.

Tom Scott, head of the Massachusetts Superintendents Association, said some districts may consider holding school on planned days off.

"You look at professional days, whether they move those days to be instructional days for students. Whether you use your April vacation," Scott said, "I would imagine in most situations it's too late to do anything about the February vacation."

Some schools are surveying parents for solutions. The education commissioner said it is too early to grant a waiver to the law that schools must be open for 180 days.
