In 2010, Mass. Men Gained More Jobs Than Women

New figures show jobs added in Massachusetts last year went to men at a greater rate than women.

Men typically have a higher unemployment rate than women during recessions. That’s because women are more likely to leave the job market for family reasons. But this last recession was especially hard on males.

Northeastern University economist Alan Clayton-Matthews said that’s because it hit different industries in different ways.

"Education and health services did better than manufacturing and construction. And education and health services are more likely to employ women than men," Clayton-Matthews said.

Recent growth in manufacturing, construction and technology, meant more men were hired than women. Even so, the unemployment rate for Massachusetts men is still close to 10 percent. It’s less than 8 percent for women.
