MIT Lights Up The Charles River

If you're near the Charles River at night this weekend, be sure to look around — because you're in for a spectacle.

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology is continuing its 150th anniversary celebration with a glowing festival along the river.

"The Mass. Avenue Bridge is going to be lit up with an array of LED lights that will sense people walking back and forth on the bridge," said producer Meg Rotzel, describing one of more than 20 interactive light installations in MIT's Fast Light Festival.

Another installation features a 30-foot-high inflatable barge that will float in the river.

Rotzel recalls when MIT moved its campus over the Charles to Cambridge in 1916. "That was actually done with a lot of fanfare on a barge, so that's kind of a nod to the past," she said.

Memorial Drive will be closed to cars both nights from 6 to 11 p.m.

This program aired on May 7, 2011. The audio for this program is not available.
