GOP-Led Group Unveils 2 Congressional Map Proposals

A Republican-led group is unveiling two proposed congressional maps, including one containing a district with a majority of black, Hispanic and other minority residents.

Rep. Daniel Winslow, a Wrentham Republican, said Census data shows Suffolk County, which includes Boston, is now a so-called majority-minority county. Massachusetts is losing one of its 10 congressional seats.

Winslow is the legal counsel for FairDistrictsMass.org, a group chaired by former Republican senate candidate Jack E. Robinson. Winslow described the group as nonpartisan.

Republican U.S. Sen. Scott Brown has also called for a minority-majority district.

Winslow said the state Office of Campaign and Political Finance ruled the group could collect unlimited donations, including from corporations, without reporting them.

Having alternative maps in place will make it easier for Republicans to challenge any congressional map produced by the majority-Democratic Legislature.
