News of former state House Speaker Salvatore DiMasi’s conviction on corruption charges traveled quickly around Boston’s North End neighborhood. DiMasi represented the largely Italian-American district for some 30 years and still lives on busy Commercial Street.

A federal jury convicted DiMasi and one of his two co-defendants Wednesday, after finding that they had engaged in conspiracy, mail fraud and wire fraud, and that DiMasi had committed extortion as well.

Many North End residents were unhappy to see one of their own in federal court.
