State Transportation Secretary Jeffrey Mullan plans to step down by the end of this year for personal reasons.

Mullan that said he talked with Gov. Deval Patrick in May about resigning but made no final decision.

The governor said in a statement that he will miss Mullan's leadership whenever he decides to leave, and that he supports Mullan's decision.

The Boston Globe reported that Mullan wants to leave his job because the governor did not grant his request for a pay raise.

Mullan has been criticized for not immediately telling the public about a light fixture that collapsed inside a Big Dig tunnel earlier this year, but he says he made his resignation decision before that incident.
