BOSTON — A federal magistrate judge on Friday, acting on a request from the defendant, formally ordered that James “Whitey” Bulger’s longtime girlfriend, Catherine Greig, be detained pending trial.
Greig had voluntarily consented to be detained without prejudice on Wednesday. That came at the end of a hearing in which representatives of the families of four alleged murder victims charged against Bulger opposed her bid for release on bail.
The judge says she will give Greig’s lawyer more time to present more information about why Greig should receive bail.
Greig is facing charges of harboring a fugitive.
