MBTA Plans Normal Service During Hurricane Irene

It's business as usual for the MBTA as Hurricane Irene barrels toward Massachusetts. A spokesman says the T is increasing staff, while buses and trains are currently scheduled to run on a normal weekend timetable - unless conditions significantly deteriorate.

Spokesman Joe Pesaturo says the agency is participating in twice a day conference calls with the National Weather Service and the state Emergency Management Agency.

In preparation for the storm, workers have been inspecting pump rooms and poor drainage areas. No T tunnels have flooded since 1996.

Wire crews are being deployed on trolley lines starting Saturday night and the T has retained a tree-cutting service for the weekend.

An emergency power source has been tested and fueled.

Travelers are urged to check MBTA.com before heading out.
