Storm Knocks WBUR Offline Briefly

BOSTON — Tropical Storm Irene knocked WBUR’s on-air broadcast offline for about seven seconds just before noon Sunday.

A power outage in Newton, where WBUR’s transmitter is located, brought down the transmitter, but the backup generator got the broadcast up and running again quickly.

WBUR engineer Michael LeClair said that the transmitter power was cut twice Sunday morning, but the second outage has lasted longer and seems to be more serious.
