Police say Gabriel Josh-Cazir Pierre may have been left in the van undetected for hours Monday as temperatures reached the low 80s.

His mother, Virginia Cazir, issued a statement Tuesday through police, saying the family is "heartbroken over the loss of our beautiful son."

Police say he was discovered at about 3:45 p.m. by the van driver, who called police and later was treated at a hospital for a "stress-related issue."

Police haven't identified the day care owner, but say her husband was the van driver. Authorities say they have not decided if anyone will be charged.

An autopsy was being done to determine the cause of the boy's death.
