Mass. Tax Revenues Up 9 Percent In September

Massachusetts is reporting another strong month for tax revenues.

The state Department of Revenue said Tuesday that preliminary revenue collections in September were up $178 million, or nearly 9 percent, from the same month a year ago.

Income tax collections rose nearly 14 percent last month compared to September 2010, while business and corporate tax collections were more than 5 percent higher. Sales tax collections, however, rose only 1.6 percent.

A spokesman for the department says the continued revenue growth means it's possible that Massachusetts taxpayers will receive an automatic slight reduction in the state income tax in January, but a final determination isn't expected until December.
