    How to slow down the slowing down. The only effective deterrent is to keep the brain and body active before the symptoms begin to show themselves. Make your mind work. It will build more neural connections. That will buffer the inevitable pruning of the cognitive interconnections.
    So will physical exercise. The brain burns about 19% of the nutrition in the bloodstream. A strong heart will keep that blood flowing to the brain through the carotid arteries. (You can feel it pumping as it passes from the heart up the neck, under the jaw and into the brain. (In detective  fiction you often see the good guys feeling under the fallen victim’s throat to find that pulse.)
    Exercise: Walk as fast as is still comfortable for 20 minutes at least four days each week.
