Experts Probing Nearly 100 Dead Seals

Experts are trying to determine why so many seals have turned up along the New England coastline.

Ninety-four dead seals are reported to have washed ashore along the coast from Yarmouth, Maine, down to Quincy since Sept. 1.

All appeared to be healthy with no evidence of malicious involvement, like the shootings of gray seals on Cape Cod last summer.

Federal Marine Fisheries Service Coordinator Mendy Carron says scientists are testing for biotoxins and potential disease outbreaks.

"All of the animals that are getting reported are mostly what we term the young of the year, which are the animals that have recently been weaned," Carron said. "If a disease outbreak is occurring then it might be affecting those animals that have really weak immune systems."

Test results could take up to two weeks.
