Turkish Americans In Boston Raise Money For Quake Victims

BOSTON — Turkish Americans living around Boston are raising money to send to earthquake survivors in eastern Turkey.

“We cannot send material goods to Turkey, it’s so far way,” said Erkut Gömülü, the president of the Turkish American Society of New England. “If they could buy what they need in the earthquake region it would be more helpful to them and the surrounding economy.”

Gömülü says there are approximately 5,000 Turkish Americans live in the Boston area.

“We are racing against time,” said Murat Lutem, consul general of Turkey to Boston. “[It's] a vast area, it’s very rugged, so reaching each and every little nook and cranny and village there is going to take a lot of our efforts.”
