Foxborough Selectmen Vote No On Casino

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft sent a letter Tuesday urging the town of Foxborough to give residents the chance to consider his proposal for a casino. But the town’s Board of Selectmen took a stand against Kraft’s proposal before he formally made it, by voting 3-2 Tuesday night to send a letter to Kraft, as well as to the governor and casino developer Steve Wynn, that the town is unwilling to host a casino.

Tuesday Night’s Meeting

Selectboard Chairman Lawrence Harrington opened the meeting at Foxborough High School by trying to quell any potential fireworks with a preemptive call for civility.

But keeping the lid on the crowd of nearly 700 was challenging. Residents from Foxborough and nearby towns lined up to speak, including Michelle Paluzzi.

“I know with the casino there is a promise of excessive amounts of money coming into town, but I have to say there is no amount of money worth accepting when it’s no longer a town you want to live,” Paluzzi said.

Some in the crowd have not made up their minds, like Mike Salzman, who would welcome more information from the developers.

“I’m very, very concerned with all the things I am hearing,” Salzman said. “They’re all emotional issues that can’t be quantified. There are too many facts that are missing.”

But others say they have all the facts they need, like union carpenter and Foxborough resident Paul Vey.

“I am out of work and am desperately looking for work,” Vey said. “Me and my family are not living in the Foxborough dream possibly.”

After about 45 minutes Harrington tried to move on to the selectboard’s agenda. But a longtime town resident, Helen Gutowski Merrigan, insisted on being heard.

“Two white sharks are circling Foxborough,” she said. “They both think the town of Foxborough is asleep, and easy pickings and that everything has a price.”

The meeting went on for several hours and in the end the board voted the proposal down. But Kraft and casino developer Wynn could still present a formal proposal to the public.

LETS  TAKE A SURVEY. WHERE WOULD MORE PEOPLE GO FOR GAMBLING ?  Foxborough OR  East  Boston.
Everything Bob Kraft has done for the TOWN of FOXBOROUGH and the town basically threw him out. The selectmen should be ashamed of themselves. They  should have at least heard the plan and let the town vote. Mr. KRAFT did say if the people of Foxborough didn’t want it, then he would not build it. Mr. Kraft should maybe build  a NEW FENWAY PARK in Foxborough and have at least 80 baseball games. ALL MY GOD: what about that traffic.
Foxborough would have been the best place for a casino because of the access to route 95,495,1 and the train. The casino would put MASSACHUSETTS on the map. IT WILL NOT WORK IN EAST BOSTON. Have you been there. The mayor of BOSTON is a gambling man if he thinks East Boston will work. More people would go to Foxborough than East Boston based on a traffic study alone. By the way, was there a traffic study done in Foxborough.
AND I can tell you the traffic at fist would be tough until the newness goes away.
FOXWOODS and MOHEGAN SUN doesn’t have traffic problems any more.
My last words are: Mr. Kraft is a class act. He knows what is good for Foxborough is good for Massachusetts. GIVE HIM ANOTHER CHANCE.
    THANKS,
    BOB THE BUILDER

Mr. Kraft may be a good guy, but Steve Wynn give off a very bad vibe.  It does seem unfair, though, that Kraft can’t even present his plan.

ACTUALLY BOB KRAFT ASKED THE RED SOX TO COME TO FOXBOROUGH, JOHN  HENRY LAUGHED AT HIM & DON’T BLAME HIM.  WHY WOULD THE RED SOX  GET LAUGHED AT LIKE THE PATRIOTS.   THE NFL LAUGHS AT THE STADIUM IN FOXBOROUGH THEIR HOST CITY IS RHODE ISLAND & THE PATRIOT’S  USE THE RHODE ISLAND AIRPORT.  KRAFT ALWAYS WANTED TO GET THE PATRIOTS BACK TO BOSTON, THEY DON’T WANT THEM BECAUSE OF ALL THE PROBLEMS FOXBOROUGH HAS WITH THEM.  A CASINO, I GUESS  YOU HAVE NO SYMPATHY FOR PEOPLE WHO LIVE IN WALPOLE OR FOXBOROUGH.  A CASINO IS OPENED 24 /7.  DO YOU LIVE WHERE THEY WANT TO PUT THIS CASINO???

Steve Wynn is a major talent in the gaming industry. Whatever he does will bring success in gaming and excellence in design. He is well respected in Las Vegas and every other major gaming venue worldwide. He brings “class” to the industry and will not do a low quality project. Quite frankly, everyone was surprised that he showed any interest in adding additional domestic gaming projects – Mass will benefit from his involvement.  Face it, Mass is going to get some casinos – why not have a Wynn project? It is really the best choice for any project and it will be of the highest quality and be the most carefully designed.
