WBURGOP Insiders’ Message To Romney: Step It Up

BOSTON — With the GOP presidential caucuses set to wrap up this weekend in Maine, several high-profile Republicans are sending Mitt Romney a strong message: step it up.

This comes after Romney lost to Rick Santorum in three states this week.

WBUR’s political team, Republican political analyst Todd Domke and Democratic analyst Dan Payne, joined Morning Edition to discuss these Romney setbacks.

Thank you so much for having Todd and Dan who are such great, pithy, smart analysts. No one else has such straightforward and clear analysis. As usual, WBUR is the best!Â

I am commenting here about Todd Domke’s comments on morning edition on Wednesday, February 15, 2012, because I couldn’t intuitively find (at 9:53 in the morning on 2/15) an apparently appropriate place to write a comment about this morning’s program. Mr. Domke made a comment, an “aside” really, as he was talking about Mitt Romney, in which he said something to the effect of “… like Davy Crockett at the Alamo. Of course, as we all know, Davy Crockett wasn’t really at the Alamo.” So, everything that I listened to coming out of the mouth of Mr. Domke suddenly became suspect. It was such an amazing statement (sort of in the same category of amazement as “I’m not really concerned about the poor.) that I had to check the histoiry books and Wikipedia and others before I realized my initial gut response to Mr. Domke’s comment about Davy Crockett was the correct one (“What the h*** did he just say?”). I had always listened to Mr. Domke’s commentaries with great respect if not complete agreement. But such a thoughtless toss-away smirking comment will always color my view of Mr. Domke and undermine my faith in his professionalism. Unless, of course, he adequately explains his comment. Although I am not sure I can define what an adequate explanation would be.
