Ex-Lawrence School Chief Gets 90 Days

The former superintendent of the Lawrence school system has been sentenced to 90 days in jail after his conviction for using school resources for his own gain.

Wilfredo Laboy also received a year of home confinement during sentencing on Friday.

A jury convicted Laboy of fraud and embezzlement, finding he used school employees for tasks such as electrical work at his home, driving his son around and disposing of his trash.

The 61-year-old Laboy apologized in court and said he took responsibility for his "poor decisions."

Laboy was superintendent in Lawrence for about a decade before being fired in 2010. He faced up to 10 years in prison.

Essex Superior Court Judge Richard Welch said Laboy had "abused his position of trust" and the sentence would deter similar crimes.
