Due To Contract Impasse, Boston Schools Lose $9M In Federal Funds

Failure to reach agreement on a new contract with its teachers union has cost the Boston Public Schools $9 million in federal funds for teacher bonuses and other initiatives.

The city's schools and the Boston Teachers Union had already agreed on how to distribute the federal funds, but the union reportedly would not sign off on the deal without resolving a separate teachers' contract.

Both sides were still talking Monday, but JC Considine, a spokesman for the Massachusetts Education Department, says it's too late.

"The commissioner told both sides he could not extend the [federal funding] deadline any further than the end of March," he said. "It's too late."

Considine says the commissioner will likely give the money to another school district.
