Free Performance Brings Opera To The Masses
Free opera is rare, but a local contemporary music company is offering free seats to a world premiere.
The three-day run of "The Fiddler and the Old Woman of Rumelia" will be staged at the Calderwood Pavillion by the Juventas New Music Ensemble, a group that features contemporary work by composers under the age of 35. The production is supported by a grant from the Free For All Concert Fund.
Music director Lidiya Yankovskaya said the funding is a major boost because new operas can be a tough sell.
"What's great about presenting these performances for free is that anybody can have the freedom to go and try something new, and hopefully get hooked on new music," Yankosvkya said.
Like many of her fellow musicians, Yankovskaya once worked for Opera Boston, which collapsed last December.
She believes this new production is further proof that Boston's opera scene continues not only to survive, but to thrive.
