Trial Begins In Killing Of Boston 14-Year-Old

Jury selection begins Monday in the trial of two suspected gang members accused of killing a Dorchester middle school student in 2010.

The murder of 14-year-old Nicholas Fomby-Davis two years ago shocked his neighborhood and the city. Authorities said the boy was not involved with gangs.

Crisostomo Lopes, 22, and Joshuia Fernandes, 18, are both charged with first-degree murder for the May 31, 2010, killing. From the Suffolk County District Attorney's office:

Lopes allegedly snatched the boy from the scooter he’d been riding and held him out at arm’s length while Fernandes allegedly fired multiple shots at him from a .45 caliber handgun. Fomby-Davis was mortally wounded and died a short time later at Boston Medical Center.

As WBUR's Bianca Vazquez Toness reported in 2010, Fomby-Davis' murder led police to blanket Dorchester with fliers showing men who police said associated with the suspects.

The fatal 2010 shooting occurred two weeks after another 14-year-old, Jaewon Martin, was shot and killed on a basketball court.

This program aired on June 4, 2012. The audio for this program is not available.
