New Brighton Commuter Rail Station Announced

Massachusetts transportation officials and the shoe company New Balance on Thursday announced an agreement to build a new commuter rail station in Brighton.

The station — New Brighton Landing — will be on the Framingham/Worcester line, and will be located at Everett and Guest streets.

"As part of the agreement," the Massachusetts Department of Transportation said in its release, "New Balance will fund all permitting, design, and construction costs for the station and fund annual maintenance costs."

Last month, as the Boston Globe reported, New Balance detailed plans for a new headquarters of at least four buildings at the location in Brighton.

Boston City Councilor Mark Ciommo told our Newscast unit he's glad the company is stepping up to the plate for the commuter rail station.

"We know the T doesn't have the financing on its own to build this stop, so to have the kind of partner and neighbor that [New Balance Chairman James Davis] is, it's just a great day for our neighborhood," he said.

According to the state, the station will increase employment in the area and create 400 full-time construction jobs.

This program aired on June 7, 2012. The audio for this program is not available.
