Defense Attorney Seeks 27-Month Sentence For Bulger Girlfriend

Catherine Greig, the longtime girlfriend of James "Whitey" Bulger who pleaded guilty to helping him elude authorities for 16 years, is seeking a 27-month prison sentence.

"The defendant agrees with the [Probation Department's] recommended guideline sentence range of 27 to 33 months. The defendant is requesting this Court impose a sentence at the low end of the guidelines," Greig's attorney, Kevin Reddington, wrote in a sentencing memo Monday.

Greig will be sentenced Tuesday in federal court in Boston. According to the Associated Press:

Greig faces a maximum of 15 years — 5 years on each of three charges: conspiracy to harbor a fugitive, identity fraud and conspiracy to commit identity fraud.

On Friday, prosecutors requested a 10-year prison sentence for Greig.

“This is no garden variety harboring case. It is the most extreme case of harboring this district has ever seen,” First Assistant U.S. Attorney Jack Pirozzolo wrote, according to the AP.

"Experience and judicial wisdom will see that three Class D felonies do not warrant such a sentence," Reddington wrote of the government's recommendation, "and it is not justice to use the law as a cudgel to exact the proverbial 'pound of flesh' from a kind, gentle 60 year old woman who is at the mercy of this Court for a fair sentence commensurate with her conduct which arose out of the love she had for Mr. James Bulger."

Reddington added that Greig was unaware of cash and weapons hidden in the apartment she and Bulger shared for more than a decade.

"There is no evidentiary or factual basis to find that Ms. Greig was aware of weapons or money," Reddington wrote.
