Boston Phoenix, Stuff Magazine Will Merge To Become A Glossy Hybrid

BOSTON — The Boston Phoenix and its sibling publication Stuff are merging to become a new, glossy weekly magazine.

At 45 years old, The Boston Phoenix is one of the country’s oldest alternative newsweeklies. The younger Stuff focuses on nightlife.

On Wednesday the Phoenix Media/Communications Group announced the free publications will become one. The new glossy will be called The Phoenix. It’ll hit stands in September.

“All newspapers and all news magazines and all publishers are trying to come up with the secret sauce of how to innovate, how to survive, how to keep moving forward instead of moving backward,” said Carly Carioli, the new editor-in-chief.

Carioli said the new hybrid will be visually rich and efficient to produce.

He confirmed that five employees were laid off last week.

This news comes just months after WFNX-FM, the Phoenix Group’s alternative music radio station, was sold to Clear Channel.
