Boston Combats Chronically Late School Buses

Attempts by Boston's superintendent of schools to address the city's chronically late school buses will be tested with this week's start of classes.

Late buses have plagued the city for the past two years. At the start of last year, 37 percent of Boston school buses were as much as an hour late.

The Boston Globe reports that this year, Superintendent Carol Johnson has hired a new transportation director and drew up bus routes earlier. She and her staff also cross-referenced computer-generated travel times with drivers' knowledge of roads and intersections.

Last year, many routes didn't schedule time between stops or had drivers dropping kids off at the same time they were scheduled to start their next route.

The School Department will transport more than 33,000 students to 228 schools this week.
